The Wall of Tears

Wall of Tears - Isabela Island

The Wall of Tears is a historical site located 5km west from Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island. The wall is 25 meters tall and was constructed by the prisoners of a penal colony established on Isabela Island during 1945 to 1959. The site’s appropriate name has to do with the sweat and tears that went into the wall’s construction, working all day in the hot sun, walking long distances, carrying heavy volcanic rocks, and being severely punished, with many prisoners dying. The saying went “Here the strong cry and the weak die.”
